Adrian Kendrick (CR '06) has a passion for writing. She works as an editorial assistant for Indianapolis Woman. Adrian is the social media specialist dealing with Facebook and Twitter for the magazine also. Beside Indianapolis Woman she writes freelance for Indy's Child and Cincinnati Parent.
Through working for Indianapolis Woman Adrian has had a chance to work with inspiring women, sometimes even celebrities. Often times when she writes a review she receives free items or coupons. Additional perks can include free tickets to events, and she is also connected with a lot of people in the city and beyond.
"The coolest thing to show up in my mail was a cake. They had sent it overnight and packed in ice for it to keep," Kendrick said.
She enjoys writing so much she even spends her free time doing it on her fashion blog AK's World. It started as a personal blog for fun and has grown into much more. "At first it was just me writing about personal things, however, it evolved in to me writing about fashion, which is what I love. I interview local designers, stylists and boutique owners in the fashion industry. It also has other tidbits of fun things but its main focus is fashion," Kendrick said.
Being a student at Cardinal Ritter impacted Adrian's love of writing. She was involved in both the newspaper and yearbook. "We tried to give different perspectives. It was quirky and fun - the oldest book in the library, the number of steps it takes to get down the hallway," she said. This sparked her interest in writing and she enjoyed having the freedom to be creative. Teachers also had an impact on Adrian while she was at Ritter. Mr. Cavanaugh and Mr. Pfennig came to her mind. "We learned something new every day. I was eager to go to their classes. They were both very good teachers," she said.
Adrian says being creative is a positive outlet and it is important to chase one's dream. Her advice, "I once heard, 'talent wants to express itself' and I have come to find out this is true. If you don't have a job that allows you to do what you're passionate about, find something that does. Utilize your talents in a side hobby. It's important that you find some type of outlet to do what you love."
