Raiders XC Close-Out Regular Season at ICC Championships & City Championships

In a span of three weeks, the Raiders competed in the Indiana Crossroads Conference Championships, Nike Twilight and the Indianapolis City Alliance Championships.

In the new format of the Indiana Crossroads Conference, the Boys team placed 5th overall (124 points) and the Girls team were Conference runner-ups (44 points), both to winners Heritage Christian High School. Seniors Jose Bustamante and Sawyer Finke were the first Raiders across the line in 20:10 and 21:24 respectively. Finke earned All-Conference honors with her 3rd place finish.

Six days later on Friday, a small contingent of the Raider squad traveled to Terre Haute for the annual Nike Twilight Invitational at Lavern Gibson Cross Country Course, home of the IHSAA State Meet. Jose Bustamante again led the Boys team, finishing in 197th place in 20:15, and freshman Lottie Kappel was the first finisher of the Girls team in 120th place in 23:28. The experience is not like any other and it was full of excellent competition in the Open races - complete with a fireworks show to cap off the night.

At the annual Indianapolis City Alliance Championships, this year held at Brebeuf High School, the Raiders ended the day with thirteen (out of twenty) personal best efforts. In the Boys varsity race, senior Jose Bustamante finished in 29th place in 19:38. Personal best performances in that race included senior Johnathon Curtis (48th place, 22:40), Oudock Urayo (49th place, 22:52, and sophomore Jackson Franco (51st place, 23:26). They placed 8th as a team. In the Girls race, senior Sawyer Finke was just outside All-City honors with a 12th place finish in 20:14 (PR). Senior Yeli Reyes (24th, 23:15), junior Joy Olvera Mendez (27th, 23:48), and sophomore Sophia Cordoba (38th place, 32:00) also posted personal best races. Together, they placed 4th overall. In the Freshman race, all six freshmen set new personal bests and Lottie Kappel and Lanny Nguyen placed 6th & 7th overall to earn All-City honors in their first cross country seasons. It was fun to watch the six newest members of the team race head to head: Nicolas Spaulding-Price (18th, 21:54), Lottie Kappel (6th, 22:31), Timothy Van Gheem (23rd, 22:33), Lanny Nguyen (7th, 22:41), Kyle Magno (47th, 26:30) and MaKenzie Glass (30th, 29:52).

This was also the opportunity where the team recognized the 12 seniors on the two cross country teams. Some have been on the team for the first time this season, and others have been running since their freshman year: Jose Bustamante (4 years); Johnathon Curtis (2 years); Bella Drake (4 years); McHarris Hodonou (1 year); Sawyer Finke (4 years); Mark Liston (4 years); Kara May (4 years); Omar Ortela Abraham (3 years); Sebastian Sherrod (2 years); Yeli Reyes (1 year); Oudock Urayo (2 years); Tysen Woods (2 years). The Raiders will enter the IHSAA State Tournament at the Ben Davis Sectional on October 18th.
